The Cenotaph has stood its ground for decades in Cobourg’s Victoria Park. On Canada Day, 2009, it is surrounded by tents of hucksterism, selling cheap goods from Pakistan, India, Korea, China, and other developing countries, fast foods, etc.
Surrounded by mediocrity, it stands tall with dignity. The Lion’s Club of Cobourg still thinks inside the box by sponsoring a poster drawing contest for local school children; the theme is Peace. Sadly, not once, is there a community organization that sponsors the idea that FREEDOM has any value. It’s wilful neglect.
While people play out their daily lives in the shadow of this cenotaph, a poet adorns it with a pearl, a Free Speech card, as a reminder that the blood spilled was not in vain.

REST IN PEACE
LIVE IN FREEDOM
